Farewell Heidelberg High School!

As the U.S. Army base in Heidelberg closed down in June of 2013, it meant the end of an era to many things, including the schools our children had attended, off an on, for many years.  On May 31, Heidelberg American High School held its final closing ceremonies to say goodbye to its students, teachers and administrators, past and present.  Many teachers and students from former years came for the event to commemorate the significance of Heidelberg, and its American high school, in their lives.  It was a touching event, which felt much like a funeral!  It was hard to say goodbye to something that had been an integral part of our lives for the past few years, and an important memory for so many others over the past 67 years! Farewell Heidelberg Lions! We will never forget how much you meant to us!

Hooray for Scholarships!

Lissie has worked so hard this past year.  I convinced her to take three AP classes for the chance to graduate with honors, and she increased her dance instruction to four times per week.  Her senior year was very busy and very productive.  The poor girl was sleep deprived for much of each week, and welcomed the weekends of downtime.  The requirements for scholarship applications -- especially writing all those essays -- added to her workload.  But we are pleased that the scholarship committees recognized her hard work and achievements.  By the end of May, she had been awarded four separate academic scholarships, AND she graduated with honors.

New Beginnings International Christian Center; banquet in Frauenweiler, 27 April
*She had to share a talent (vocal and guitar rendition of "Live Like You Believe") and give a speech at    this awards banquet.

Delta Sigma Theta; banquet at Stuttgart Swabian Event Center, 19 May.
*She was asked to read her essay at this one.

Hooray!  It was enough money to get her through summer term and her first semester of BYU-I.

Here she is with some of her fellow Delta Sigma Theta scholarship recipients:

Heidelberg Prom

For prom this year Lissie invited Taylor Clark to be her date:

And Bryant invited Shannon Walker:

Ezra Clark came too and joined Bryant with his group of friends:

They all met at the Schwetzingen Palace for pre-Prom pictures, followed by dinner at the Brauhaus. Bryant and his friends had arranged for a limousine ride from Schwetzingen up to the Heidelberg Castle, and we noticed that many other prom-goers had had the same idea as we saw quite the impressive line-up of limousines in front of the palace gates.

We were blessed with a beautiful sunny day which was so welcomed after the days and days of rain in the previous days.

And here is my favorite picture of the evening . . . Lissie once again convincing Bryant that he needs a peck on the cheek.

And what a wonderful way to remember Heidelberg's very last prom!
